When you grow up with MRKH, you often hear about what you don’t have. No uterus. No period. No cervix. And for many of us, that creates confusion around our bodies and a sense of disconnection from conversations about hormones and cycles.
But here is something powerful and true. If you have ovaries, your body still cycles.
That means your hormones still rise and fall in waves throughout the month.
You still feel energy shifts, emotional shifts, even desire and fatigue in patterns. You are not outside the cycle just because you do not bleed. You are still riding it - your own version of it - and that deserves recognition.
Let’s break it down. Not with medical diagrams. Just real talk about how it feels to be someone with MRKH moving through hormonal phases.
Phase One: Menstrual Phase
What it is: This is the beginning of the cycle, when estrogen and progesterone are at their lowest. For people who menstruate, this is when bleeding occurs. For MRKHers, this is a quiet internal reset.
You might feel:Low energy, more emotional or tired, cravings for comfort, brain fog or sluggishness.
This phase often brings bloating, sensitivity to sound or light, or just a strong urge to rest. That is your body asking you to slow down. You are not making it up. You are cycling.
Phase Two: Follicular Phase
What it is: Estrogen starts to rise. Your brain signals your ovaries to prepare for ovulation. You are moving out of your inner winter and into a lighter phase.
You might feel: Hopeful or more optimistic, a boost in motivation, more curious or social, lighter physically and mentally
Your body may feel less puffy. You might want to organise, start projects, or be more playful. This is often when people with MRKH feel more in sync with the world.
Phase Three: Ovulation
What it is: Estrogen peaks and a surge of luteinising hormone triggers the release of an egg. Even if you have MRKH, this biological dance still happens if you have ovaries.
You might feel:More confiden, higher libido or sensual energy, more vibrant or outgoing, increased physical energy
Your skin might glow. You may feel more drawn to connection. Some MRKHers say this is when they feel most alive in their bodies. Pleasure and curiosity are heightened. It is real and it is yours.
Phase Four: Luteal Phase
What it is: Progesterone rises to prepare for a potential pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, hormone levels eventually fall and the cycle begins again.
You might feel: More tired or easily overwhelmed, irritable or emotionally tender, bloated or puffy, craving carbs or quiet time
This is a phase many MRKHers recognise as their hardest. It can come with breast tenderness, sleep disruption, or a dip in mood. This is also when conditions like PMDD may show up.

Know Your Normal
Body literacy is not just about self-love. It is also about safety. MRKH may change your anatomy, but it does not protect you from other health concerns.
You can still experience:
PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder)
Mental health changes linked to hormones
Ovarian cysts or endometriosis
Early menopause or hormonal imbalances
Gynaecological cancers (like ovarian or vaginal cancer)
Knowing your normal helps you spot when something feels off. And when something feels off, you deserve to be heard and taken seriously. Always.
So What Now?
Tracking your cycle can be life-changing. You can do this with an app, a journal, or a few notes in your phone. Pay attention to patterns. Notice when you feel full of energy and when you crash. Track what feels good and what feels heavy.
You do not need a bleed to belong in these conversations.
